Create Safe Digital Spaces on Social Media

RNW Media

Short summary

Social media is seen as an important part of young people’s lives and a way to access relevant information, express themselves, engage and learn online. However, online abuse, stigmatisation and harassment can discourage (marginalised) youth from participating in discussions about sensitive issues and expressing themselves freely.

Community moderation is a key element to building and maintain a respectful, and inclusive digital space. Careful strategic moderation of online conversations helps build trust among community members, which, in turn, can nurture diverse and resilient communities and foster strong relationships among members.

What capacity strengthening support can we provide on this topic?

RNW Media is highly experienced in implementing the kind of community moderation which encourages young people to engage in respectful dialogue, thereby allowing everyone to have a voice. This can be done by being appreciative towards the conversations that start by valuing contributions regardless political affiliation, region, gender, sexual orientation, age, or any other (intersecting) identities and by encouraging the participants to be respectful. Our CS support covers the creation of community guidelines, the application of moderation strategies, moderation measurement and techniques for self-care & resilience for the moderators themselves.

Our approach enables you to:

  • Create and sustain inclusive online communities for young people from all different backgrounds
  • Measure the effectiveness of your online moderation and inclusive approaches
  • Apply community moderation strategies to reach your country coalitions’ objectives
  • Understand the importance of coping mechanisms and self-care tools that can be used by moderators

What could the CS look like?

We facilitate an interactive a 2-day community moderation training (4hr/day in person, blended or online) accompanied by an e-learning component. Depending on your specific goals, we can provide: coaching on a moderation strategy to ensure safe and constructive conversations and/or on optimising existing moderation practices

What tools are available?

E-learning component on our Online Learning Academy with learning content, case studies & practical templates

What languages can this CS support be provided in?  English and French
