Gender-transformative approach (GTA)
In order to contribute to gender-just societies, we need to improve gender equality by transforming harmful existing structures related to gender and power. Applying the gender-transformative approach (GTA) to our work helps us in reaching these goals and is a prerequisite to ensure the SRHR of (young) people in all their diversity. Rutgers has developed several modules/trainings to guide the application of GTA in our work – regarding Value Clarification, CSE, YSF, Advocacy and within our institutions.
What capacity strengthening support can we provide on this topic?
A gender transformative approach (GTA) is an approach that actively strives to transform harmful gender norms with the aim to achieve gender justice for all. Transformation is a process. A gender transformative approach examines, questions and changes harmful gender norms and power imbalances. Because of a variety of contexts, it is impossible to speak of only one GTA; GTAs differ in their strategies and implementation.
GTA includes the following interrelated key principles:
● Working with a human rights based lens
● Amplifying young female activist’s voices and facilitate their empowerment
● Strengthening the role of young men as allies
● Addressing harmful gender norms and power dynamics
● Embracing sexual and gender diversity
The above topics are addressed through experiential learning in Module 1 (value clarification). A next step is - based on input from the value clarification workshop - to analyse needs per country context, and provide tailor made trainings/materials to integrate a gender/power lens in topics, such as CSE, YFS, Advocacy and gender within (our own) organisations.
What could the CS look like?
(Co-)facilitate a workshop or training of trainers; (Online or Real time), organise linking & learning on this topic, support from a distance and sharing our materials, learnings and case studies, contributing to a workshop or meeting as a resource person (either in person or online).
What tools are available?
The GTA Tools can be downloaded from the RHRN database or the Rutgers website:
Module 1 value clarification: Participants learn more about the human rights-based approach, women's empowerment, addressing unequal power relations, related harmful norms, men engagement and SOGIESC. (This module is always an introduction for other models and is recommended to start with).
Module 2 GTA and CSE: Here participants learn to integrate a power and gender lens into existing government approved CSE. Read more about the Zambia experience here: GTA Evidence brief Zambia
Module 3 GTA and youth-friendly services. This module aims to generate increased awareness and critical thinking on gender and power imbalances. It stimulates a process of transformation that starts at the individual level, influencing the knowledge, attitudes and skills of healthcare providers to become more gender equitable in their work with young people.
Module 4 GTA and Advocacy: Here participants learn to work with the accountability cycle and develop a gender proof contextual advocacy strategy.
Module 5 GTA in (our own) institutions: A self-reflection tool in which participants look at gender and power in their own organisation, and come up with a practical plan to practice what we preach when it comes to gender and power.

English and French (Only Module 1-4 of the GTA Manual are available in French).
